A New Castle man is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly leading police on a high-speed vehicle chase through New Castle early Tuesday.

At approximately 3 a.m. Tuesday, deputies with the Henry County Sheriff’s Department were sitting stationary at County Road 300 South when a motorcycle driving east reportedly passed the officers with no rear tail lights and no visible license plate.

According to court documents, the deputies pulled onto County Road 300 South to try and catch up to the motorcycle. The motorcycle then reportedly passed a car and continued towards State Road 103. The motorcycle allegedly disregarded the stop sign at the intersection of County Road 300 South and State Road 103 while turning north.

The deputy reported they turned on their emergency lights to attempt to pull over the motorcycle. The driver, who was later identified as Michael Kline, 35 of New Castle, allegedly turned to look at the fully-marked Sheriff patrol vehicle with the emergency lights on and accelerated away from them, according to the court records.

The motorcycle allegedly continued north and disregarded a stop sign at 14th Street and Riley Road. According to the probable cause affidavit, Kline allegedly turned to look at the patrol vehicle several times as officers continued behind him with emergency lights and siren activated.

Kline reportedly continued north onto 18th Street at an high rate of speed. By this point in the reported pursuit, additional police vehicles were following Kline.

The reported stated Kline then turned east onto Spring Street, disregarding several traffic control devices along the way.

Kline allegedly drove east on Spring Street and continued through the 600 block of North 31st Street. He continued until the road ended in a driveway.

According to the report, Kline tried to turn around in the driveway but turned onto pile of mulch, where he lost control of the motorcycle and laid the motorcycle down. Kline allegedly immediately got up and began running into the woods.

While running, Kline allegedly threw down a backpack and continued running away from the officers. Officers began to pursue Kline while giving several loud verbal commands for him to stop, the report stated.

Officers reported catching up to Kline in the woods and tackling him. Kline was led out of the wood line while hopping on one foot and reportedly collapsed into a soft pile of mulch.

Kline was then turned over onto his back and allegedly kicked an officer in the right shin, which the officer reported caused pain and discomfort.

Kline was taken into custody with the assistance of New Castle Police Department.

Kline allegedly started complaining of pain in his ankle, his arms and shoulders. EMS was contacted and requested at the scene to provide medical care.

Officers went to look at the motorcycle. According to the report, the motorcycle had no license plate and the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) appeared to have been scratched off. The motorcycle was unable to be identified other than markings labeling it as Honda CBR 600. A towing company was requested to take possession of the motorcycle and a hold was placed on the motorcycle for further investigation.

An officer was advised that a prescription pill container was found inside the backpack that Kline allegedly dropped. The name on the pill bottle reportedly did not match Kline’s name.

There were allegedly several different kinds of pills in the bottle. These pills were later identified as Buprenorphine Hydrochloride and two different types of Clonidine Hydrochloride pills.

Henry County Dispatch reported that Kline had active arrest warrants out of Henry County.

Kline was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. According to the report, Kline was not cooperative with hospital staff and advised that he did not need x-rays. Kline allegedly told a deputy that he had another motorcycle and when he bonds out he would run again.

After hospital staff gave a deputy paperwork deeming Kline fit for incarceration, he was transported to the Henry County Jail.

According to the court documents, deputies continued their investigation of the motorcycle later on Tuesday. Upon viewing the motorcycle in the daylight, it reportedly “became very obvious” the motorcycle had been painted and was not the original factory color. The motorcycle had been painted red and black, however deputies reported the motorcycle was previously white in color.

There were allegedly two locations on the motorcycle where the identification number had been removed, making the VIN unreadable as whole. Deputies used identification numbers located on the motor of the motorcycle to reveal that the motorcycle was reported stolen out of Ludlow, Kentucky on July 11. Henry County Dispatch confirmed that the motorcycle was reported stolen.

Due to the motorcycle being reported stolen, a felony charge of auto theft was added to Kline’s charges.

On Wednesday, officers responded to the 400 block of North 30th Street in reference to a theft of property report. The complainant claimed Kline had come to their residence on Tuesday. The person told police Kline was acting strangely. After Kline left the residence, the complainant reportedly could not find their laptop.

The complainant showed the officer the computer box, which had the serial number along with the model number of the laptop. Officers advised that the computer was in Kline’s possession at the time of his arrest.

Michael Kline was charged with Level 6 felonies resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, battery on law enforcement, auto theft, and possession of a legend drug and Class A Misdemeanors resisting law enforcement, conversion and possession of a controlled substance.

Kline pleaded not guilty at his initial hearing Wednesday. Bond was set at $50,000 surety and $6,000 cash. His jury trial is scheduled for 9 a.m. Nov. 21 in Henry Circuit Court 2.
